In the early 1920's Shevchenko created a lot of engravings. Conversion to this kind of graphic work was a result of his search for new structural solutions. Also, working with the new materials helped him to develop new visual possibilities: compared to a drawing, different understanding of line, compared to painting, different understanding of color. Shevchenko understood engraving as an integral entity built by laws of its material. From 1919 and during 1920-ties he made linocut which had the possibility for different solutions, using both painterly and graphic qualities.
