In the mid 1920's portrait started to play a bigger role in the work of Shevchenko. A person’s soul and his emotional state becomes artist’s main subject to study. In this portrait the face is a close-up. Form modeling is clear and precise; the artist works with a spot subtly conveying the gradation between light and dark. The black background is shown as a living, throbbing substance, the white stroke and the white spot turns out to be the main means of artistic expression. Concentrated look and some sort of detachment portray this man as being deeply lost in his thoughts. Such dramatic contrast of black and white conveys his gloomy mood wonderfully.
