Russian avant-garde artists showed a deep understanding of World War I in their paintings and engravings. Natalia Goncharova depicts this war as a Universal catastrophe. The complicated parable story conveys the dramatic action involving Earth characters and the forces of Heaven. "The series begin with a prologue called "Parade" as a medieval mystery or a square scene, presenting the main characters. The first page presents St. George (in Christianity - the patron of soldiers), as a kind of epigraph, setting up the viewer for a certain way. His theme is that of eternal struggle and eternal victory of light over the forces of darkness, good over evil. "
