Biblical motifs were the themes of the first engravings of Nikolay Kupreyanov, their style reminds old popular prints and Russian icon painting. They weren’t just imitations of ancient Russian images so typical of Russian art of the time, but possessed their own engraving pathos. Back in the 15th century first prints were pictures carved on one board with biblical teachings inscriptions, and later, in the 16th -18th centuries engraved images started to widely include didactical and moral inscriptions. Throughout its history engraving has repeatedly claimed the educational role not only because of advantages of the printing technology, but because of the whole system of images and symbols.
