Landscape with Rainbow, a Mill and a Cow

Paper, xylography. 218õ165 (185õ122). V. Gevorkyan`s Collection.

Nikolay Kupreyanov learned engraving from A.P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva; she was the one who gave him his first xylography lessons. A.P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva wrote in her autobiography: "In winter of 1917 N.N. Kupreyanov, a young and aspiring artist, came to me with a letter from my sister. He wanted me to teach him the wood cutting techniques. I was happy to work with him and soon noticed with what energy and determination he studied... At that time Kupreyanov was my only apprentice-engraver, apart from Vadim Falileev, whom I taught in 1915. Kupreyanov’s original and distinctive talent started to manifest in his first engravings. I didn’t impose anything of myself on him; I only tried to make the process of learning easier. One of his first prints, as I now recall, were: “Livery Driver with a Wain” on the background of an urban landscape, and the landscape “Windmill, Rainbow and Cow”. Interpretation of objects and scenery was crude, heavy and lapidary. But at the same time it had power, expressiveness and epical elements. It was a great engraving talent, cunning for its originality. "
