Versailles is the former residence of French kings, a grand palace and park complex, built in 1661-1666 for Louis XIV "The Sun King". Construction was supervised by the architects Louis Le Vau and Jules Hardouin-Mansart, and Andre Le Notre designed the park. The architecture and gardens of Versailles were Benois’s favorite subjects. He’d draw in the parks for 8-10 hours, and then he’d bring his drawings home to put them in order and to create compositions about the life of the XVIII century.
