Pale Horse is an allegory of Death. This is one of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. It embodies the chaos, destruction and death: "... and I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over the fourth of the Earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the Earth. " (Revelation, Chapter 6:7-8). In Natalya Goncharova’s work this image embodies the theme of human sacrifices and death as indispensable companions to all wars and strife.
