Vasily Vasilievich Mathe (1856-1917) was an outstanding master of reproduction prints; he taught engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts and created a galaxy of outstanding artists and engravers. Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, Vadim Falileev, Pavel Shillingovsky, Ivan Pavlov and many others were among his students. Mathe played a huge role in making engraving an independent art. He taught Ilya Repin, Isaak Levitan, Boris Kustodiev different engraving techniques. Valentin Serov also studied engraving under Mathe’s supervision and in 1898-1899 he mastered the techniques of etching and lithography.
