Serov was an outstanding master of portrait; he painted and draw a whole gallery of portraits of his contemporaries. He had a lot in common with Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva; they both were part of an art association Mir iskusstva ["World of Art "], they were friends with Sergey Diaghilev, they studied engraving with V. Mathe, they met at mutual friends’s and colleagues’s places. In winter, at the end of 1899, while visiting Alexandre Benois, Serov sketched Ostroumova sitting in an armchair. Later this image was transferred to a lithograph.
